If you aren't looking, you might miss it.
If you keep listening to the voices of others, you might be mislead.
For all the Bible says and doesn't say -
for all its stories and its complications
It tells of humans seeking answers
It doesn't smooth down the rough edges
It doesn't pinpoint the path
It guides us to wrestle and struggle and want
If only we have safe spaces to do so -
Safe spaces to ask the unsafe questions
To walk the path of these ancient tales in contemporary times
Asking like so many before us what it all means.
It is easy to get caught up in the "shalls" and the "shall nots"
and get overwhelmed and place that leather bound mammoth to the side.
Filled with intrigue and mystery and deceit and despair
Joy and gratitude and celebration and praise
And yet -
In these human stories of The Divine -
There is one repetition that keeps coming back.
If you aren't looking, you might miss it.
If you keep listening to the voices of others, you might be mislead.
Look closely - but know it doesn't take much looking to find it.
Pay attention - but know it is not hiding.
love.
Depending on your version - you may get love over 300 times - over 500 times - even over 800 times - in the pages of Holy Writ.
Did you know?
So many people insist on the hatred
The hurtful
The Us against Them.
But you can't love if you are focused on hating.
It takes too much energy
too much distraction
If it feels like too much
too big
too confusing
too complicated
Your best bet is to try love.
Love opens doors.
When you choose it
you are in good company -
God
Jesus
Paul
and many more
So give it a try
Make it your mantra
Hold it in your pocket so it is ready
to give generously
whenever you can.
If you aren't looking, you might miss it.
If you keep listening to the voices of others, you might be mislead.
But what you'll find
is that always...
Love opens doors.
