Too Much, Not Enough

Summer is supposed to be a time of lightness, but this summer sure has felt heavy. While so many families share excitement for summer plans and summer camps, it is particularly heartbreaking to hear the news out of Texas, and about Camp Mystic. The stories are too, too, too much - absolutely heartbreaking. And yet there was not enough help. What can we do?
Poet Tanner Olson recently wrote a post of his grief over these immeasurable losses. He finished with a prayer that says:
A Prayer
God, be near.
We don’t have the words,
just broken hearts
trying to hold onto what has been lost.
We lift to You
each name,
each heart.
You know them — every one.
You love them more than we can.
For the families waiting —
give them strength to hold on,
hope that presses in
even when the night does not end.
For those who search,
steady their hands.
For those who mourn,
wrap them in peace
that makes no sense
and does not let go.
God, be near in the heartbreak.
Be near in the darkness.
Be near in the questions
that don’t have answers.
You promised to be close to the brokenhearted —
come close now,
and always.
Let Your light shine
where the world has gone dim.
And for the families
who have received the unthinkable news,
God, hold them.
Surround them.
Give them hope
when hoping feels impossible.
God, be near.
Amen.
There are so many ways we feel helpless in the face of immense hurting. Olson puts words to our deep heartbreak. And I do believe prayers help - AND so do our greater actions. Doing something meaningful directs healing resources, exercises our compassion skills, and engages our callings. Please consider giving to a reputable charitable group that is directly involved in helping those affected by this tragedy. And as always, be aware of scams, do your research before you give.
In a world that often feels like too much, with not enough for those in great need - consider the person you feel called to be and take meaningful steps toward love.
