Who do you want to be?

In just a few days, I'll be graduating with my D.Min. from Fuller Seminary. I am really looking forward to celebrating the last few years of intense work. It has been a time of both challenge and reward, of delight, joy - and exhaustion.

This season has also been a time of deep internal work. Doctoral work, being a solopreneur of my own ministry/business, kids graduating college, peri/menopause, political instability and world upheavals, post Covid reverberations... as my friend says, "It feels like a lot because it is a lot."

I have come away more days than not asking - "Who do you want to be?"

This is a valuable question worth asking yourself in these days - who do you want to be? What will your legacy be? What do you really want to accomplish in your limited days? And when faced with stressful or even dire circumstances - how do you want to be remembered?

This means getting really honest with yourself. Are your values really lining up with who you are? Or do they need to be adjusted to reflect you becoming who you want to be?

I don't consider myself a brave person, at least not in the typical terms. I am not a risk taker, a daredevil, or a bull in the market. I am never going to jump out of plane. I am slow and steady, often hyper-vigilant to a fault. But I'll tell you this - I know who I want to be. I pray I have the courage to be brave in the ways that truly matter.

Pause for a moment and ask yourself - who do you want to be? Is that already reflected in who you are? Or, is it something you need to work on to align?

Whether it is a step toward accomplishment and celebration, a step toward forgiveness and reconciliation, a step toward courage and justice, a step toward love and acceptance, or a step toward something else completely... may you wrestle with the question of who you want to be - and may you strike out on the path toward that person.

“When we decide to start toward something that requires courage, we are often creating new possibilities for those who come after us. Our example may be the one to inspire others to turn toward their Jerusalem, whatever the path God has set before them.”
