Trust Me

Writer: Brandi DiamondBrandi Diamond

There is a saying, “Trust takes years to build, seconds to break, and forever to repair.” This quote has really been on my mind lately.

Trust is a vital resource to our wellbeing, and trauma can often center around broken trust. Today's world makes this worse - if we are paying attention, we need to be asking, what sources can we trust? Breaking trust and creating doubt are how bad players sow chaos. And so, we look with earnest for what is real and true, reliable and sure.

Trust is a key aspect of building relationships and community - whether one on one or a greater circle of connection. And this in itself is a part of our personal health journey, because if we don't have trusted connections, research shows it greatly affects our wellbeing.

I HIGHLY recommend reading Dr. Vivek Murthy's "My Parting Prescription for America." As our most recent Surgeon General, Dr. Murthy's work here might surprise you. His summary is that "community is the formula for fulfillment," and his "prescription" circles around love and serving others. Dr. Murthy even suggests that YOU are medicine for others - because the alternative to experiencing love is deeply detrimental. I promise you won't regret reading this beautiful article!

But - when trust is broken, whether intentional or unintentional, it can take forever to repair - if it even can be repaired. Some broken trust is too damaging to get past. Even if we can forgive, we may never forget.

Proverbs 22:1 says, "A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold." Think about today how you are making steps toward building your own good name. Think about how you represent yourself, your family, your colleagues, your club, your faith... These are conversations worth exploring and worth having with your family. How are each of us being - or becoming - people of trust?
